Factors to Consider When Choosing a Pallet Racking System
Many warehouses have pallet racking to ensure proper handling of goods and efficient operations. When you increase the efficiency of your storage system, you are able to carry out processes quickly and complete order fulfilment quickly.
When choosing a pallet racking system, you have to consider what your requirements are. Your efficiency may suffer when you have a storage system that doesn’t fit your requirements. Storage space has been optimized with the use of pallet racking systems. There are different systems you can choose based on what you are storing and the space available in your warehouse. These systems enable you to utilize vertical space better and there are automated systems as well that further maximize space. There are many features that these racks come with and they are specialized for many applications. You have to understand the design of the system and how it works before you decide that it is the right fit for your requirements.
Storage density is an important parameter when selecting a racking system. The specifications of your stock keeping unit including quantity, weight, and size go towards determining the type of pallet rack that is ideal for your purposes. There are racks specialised for light, medium, and heavy loads. When you are storing heavy items, the racking options that are available to you are drive-though, double-deep, push-back, and drive-in racks. There are different components of racking as well such as decking. You need to make sure that you choose the right components that provide sufficient safety to the goods that you store and also make sure that the racking system lasts for a long time.
There may be certain regulations and standards that you are expected to meet when it comes to your facility. For example, there can be wash-down requirements to ensure cleanliness. You have to choose a racking system that is compatible with these regulations. Think about how your inventory is taken. There will be a method that is most efficient to control inventory. There are FIFO (first-in, first-out) and LIFO (last-in, first-out) methods. These depend on the shelf life of the products you store as well. The racks that enable FIFO are deep lane storage units. For a LIFO inventory control system, you can go with push back racks or drive-in racks.
Once you store the items, you need to be able to access them quickly and easily. Many warehouses use forklifts so you need to think about how forklift access will be provided. There are some rack systems where proximity to the forklift is very important. One such example is the drive-through rack. And when considering forklift access, you have to think about the aisle widths as well. The width of the aisle rests on a number of factors. You have to consider the type of storage; whether it is high-density storage or whether you are storing for the long term or short term.
You should also consider the load requirement. Another important consideration is to check whether there is a seismic zone for your facility. You will need to purchase racking that is engineered specially to withstand an earthquake.
