Spices and seasonings make every dish complete. Without them, all those foods would be tasteless and boring. If you love cooking, you might already have your go-to list of essential seasonings and spices for the usual dishes that you make. However, there might be times that you’re missing a certain spice especially when you’re trying out new dishes. Although there are definitely a lot of spices and seasonings, there are some basic ones that are really handy to have in the kitchen.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is known as the king of all spices and is popular all over the world. It is used in almost any cuisine and could definitely enhance the flavour of any dish. Although it originated from India, its use is already widespread around the globe. Aside from enhancing the flavour of food, black pepper also has a lot of health benefits such as aiding in digestion and digestive health.

Garlic Salt

If you’re fond of Aussie barbecue, a jar of garlic salt is a must-have in your spice rack. The blend of roasted garlic and salt adds the perfect flavour to the meat. Garlic salt is perfect for marinating or even rubbing the meat with it. Aside from barbecue, you could also use this to season vegetables or even add to chips for an extra kick.


Another versatile spice is the cinnamon. It can be used to add flavour on sweets, teas, and many other desserts. It could also be used to liven up toast, perfect for your morning cup of tea or coffee. Cinnamon comes from the bark of laurel tree and could be bought as ground or in quills. When storing cinnamon, be sure to stock it in an airtight container to prevent losing its flavour.


Cumin is commonly used in curries, marinades, and other similar recipes. It is a perfect pair to citrus flavours because of its complementary taste and is usually added together with coriander. Cumin can be used in a lot of dishes such as salads, vegetables, and even roasted meat. When buying cumin, you could choose between powdered or seed form. When using cumin seeds, you should lightly dry roast them first before grinding.


Nutmeg comes from an evergreen tree and can be used in a wide variety of recipes. It is available in either whole or ground nutmeg. However, it is best to opt for whole nutmeg since it has a longer shelf life compared to its ground counterpart. You could keep whole nutmeg as long as you want and only grate what is needed for your recipe.


Also known as the most expensive spice, saffron came from the stigmas of the crocus flower. Saffron is perfect for recipes with rice, pasta, seafood, and meat. However, be sure to use it sparingly since it can easily overpower the natural flavour of a dish with its bitter taste and musky aroma.
